Check out these examples of Farm to School projects we've been working on!
The Great Apple Crunch
Every October, Farm to School programs across the country get together to celebrate local apples in the Great Apple Crunch! Apple-themed activities, lessons, and snacks abound.
In 2021, over 40 USD116 teachers participated in the Great Apple Crunch. We delivered local apples (from Weinzierl Fruit) to each class, and provided apple-themed lessons, coloring pages, and other activities for students to do. It was tons of fun! |
fARM fRESH tASTE tESTS
Do you remember your first time trying kale? Farm to School means letting kids have new and fun experiences with vegetables! That's why we've done several taste tests of local vegetables with students over the past few years, such as kale and carrots from Sola Gratia Farm. We asked kids to let us know if they liked it and received a whole range of responses. It's great to see kids trying new things!
We would love to do more taste tests in the coming years so that local students can try out more of the available local foods. Let us know at [email protected] if this sounds like something your class would be interested in! |
SCHOOL garden program development
Our first focus for Farm to School Implementation has been making sure that all USD116 students have equitable access to school gardening activities. School gardens are a great way to provide students with hands-on experiences that compliment in-class learning, as well as providing time outside and fostering interest and excitement in their schoolwork!
Many schools in USD116 already have a school gardening program, created by awesome teachers and advocates who want to give kids access to these resources. We've been working to help them achieve their goals. Check out the School Gardens page to learn more! |
